Diabetes mellitus is one of the main health issues in Mexico. The ways in which inhabitants of the Chiapas Highlands coexist with this disease involve a series of intertwining social, economic, cultural, and political aspects that have turned the Chiapas Highlands into one of the region’s most seriously affected by these epidemic in Mexico. This review aims to succinctly present the information offered by the authors of the book entitled Vivir sufriendo de azúcar. Representaciones sociales sobre la diabetes mellitus en tres localidades de los Altos de Chiapas (that could be translated as Living Life Suffering from Sugar: Social Representations of Diabetes Mellitus in Three Different Locations in the Chiapas Highlands). It also analyzes their main proposals, including the theoretical approach underpinning their research, their methodological choices, and the contextualization of the work within its field of knowledge.
