Abstract

ISRAEL CAZAREZ, Manuel de Jesús  and  PINTOR SANDOVAL, Renato. From Border to Border: Migration Flows of Chiapanecans to Tijuana, Baja California, 2000-2020. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2022, vol.17, e573.  Epub Mar 21, 2023. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2022.v17.573.

This paper aims to characterize the Chiapanecans migrating to Tijuana and their insertion into the labor market in Tijuana. The research is based on an analysis of the weighted samples of the 2000-2016 Survey of Migration at the North Border of Mexico (EMIF), the 2005-2020 National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), and INEGI’s 2000-2020 Population and Housing Censuses. The conditions and characteristics of these migrants predispose their taking on increasingly more precarious positions related to the maquila industry. Since their income in Tijuana is nonetheless higher than it would be in their state of origin, migration flows toward this border city are expected to continue increasing.

Keywords : domestic migration; labor insertion; labor markets.
