Abstract

SANCHEZ LIMA, José Enrique. Between Political «Neutrality» and Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction: Approaches to the Clergy’s Actions in the Face of the Disputeover the Soconusco (1824-1833). Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2024, vol.19, e711.  Epub May 09, 2024. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2024.v19.711.

The case of Soconusco’s «neutrality» and its inclusion as part of Mexico is still being discussed in academic circles. The clergy’s action in the dispute over this territory between Mexico and Central America/Guatemala has not yet been fully addressed. Within this framework, this paper aims to provide some historical perspectives through which to analyze the actions taken by the parish clergy and the Chiapas ecclesiastical hierarchy in the context of the political uncertainty in Soconusco. It takes into account the clergy’s profile and relationships within the diocese, which despite the status of political «neutrality», ecclesiastically continued to depend on the Chiapas diocese.

Keywords : borders; relations between the Church and the State; clergy; XIX century.
