Abstract

CANO CASTELLANOS, Ingreet Juliet. Agrarian Change and Environmental Issue in the Southeast of the Lacandona Rainforest: Marqués de Comillas Municipality in the Transition from the 20th to 21st Centuries. Rev. pueblos front. digit. [online]. 2024, vol.19, e713.  Epub June 21, 2024. ISSN 1870-4115.  https://doi.org/10.22201/cimsur.18704115e.2024.v19.713.

The rural complexity of Marqués de Comillas Municipality in the southeastern part of the Lacandon Rainforest in Chiapas is clear evidence of the ever-increasing gap between their way of life and the idealized projections of environmental public policy. Based on a medium-term ethnographic research trajectory, this paper describes and analyzes the process that creates this gap and the limitations of various environmental actions in the face of the local realities. This paper also examines the socio-environmental uncertainties in the region’s context, arguing that there are difficulties in recognizing the global trends of agrarian change that have permeated rural society and that this short-sightedness is a spin-off from the current process of deconfiguring and reconfiguring environmental public policy in Mexico.

Keywords : agrarian change; ecological degradation; environmental public policy; smaill-scale farmers.
