Abstract

MARIN ZAVALA, José Gabriel. Teaching literacy in secondary school from the students’ perception. CPU-e. Rev. Investig. Educ [online]. 2019, n.28, pp.31-57.  Epub Sep 11, 2020. ISSN 1870-5308.  https://doi.org/10.25009/cpue.v0i28.2598.

This contribution presents the results of an ethnographic qualitative research whose objective was to know secondary school students’ perceptions about mode and medium concepts that are used to teach Spanish classes. Data was obtained from Spanish classes observations and students’ interviews in three different secondary schools. Literature review and empirical approaches were focused within literacy events through the concepts shared by Kress (2005). Findings show a gap between the autonomous model and the ideological model of literacy. It is also found that the writing mode and the printed text medium continue as a cultural artifact which predominate in the classroom even though students in their communicative events use at least three modes and two mediums related to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that are underused in their classrooms.

Keywords : Literacy; Information and Communications Technology; teaching; ethnography.
