Abstract
LOPEZ SANTILLAN, Ricardo. Fronteras étnicas, formas de minorización y experiencias de violencia simbólica entre los profesionistas mayas yucatecos residentes en Mérida. Península [online]. 2007, vol.2, n.1, pp.137-155. ISSN 1870-5766.
This paper explains how social distinction with ethnic criteria is constructed. The empirical evidence that serves for this analysis is the discrimination experienced by Yucatecan Mayas with poor and rural background, who migrated to Mérida, and then obtained higher education and became middle-class proffessionals. In this transit, that implies simultaneously geographical and social mobility, in spite of the economic and social success, these Mayas continue to be treated like a minority and are victimized through a symbolic violence exerted by other groups of population who do not vindicate ethnic origin.
Keywords : Discrimination; Yucatecan Mayas; middle-class.
