In this paper, using newspapers and archival sources, we analyze how Alexander Dumas' novel The Count of Montecristo was received in Mérida and Mexico City. The main objective of this research is to understand the reading practices of the receptor societies and the causes that made this French novel a best-seller in the Mexican Republic.
