Abstract

MOO ESTRELLA, Emy Guadalupe  and  LOPEZ SANTILLAN, Ricardo. Middle Class Scholarship Holders in a Private University of Southeastern Mexico. Coexistence, Academic Perspectives and Professional Futures. Península [online]. 2019, vol.14, n.1, pp.9-28. ISSN 1870-5766.

From the phenomenological perspective, through the narrations of middle class students in a private university in Mérida, Yucatán, using focus groups and semi-structured interviews, we analyze the meaning of profiting a scholarship at an expensive university, as well as the way students manage their interactions with other students of different social classes. We discover their academic challenges and the implications of being middle class students who receive a scholarship from an expensive private university. There are, in the being, feeling and acting of these young people, several paradoxes that, by extension, can be a reflection of other social structures and interactions in current Mexico.

Keywords : Scholars; middle class; academic challenges; social inte raction; private university.
