Abstract

CHAVEZ ALANIS, Ángel César et al. In a biopsy by fine needle aspiration of a thyroid nodule, how fine needle should be? a prospective comparative study between two gauges of needles. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2016, vol.14, n.1, pp.19-24.  Epub Jan 24, 2022. ISSN 1870-7203.

The study of thyroid nodules involves different medical specialties, all essential to reach the correct diagnosis, although the final classification requires a cythopathologic study of the lesion. The most simple and practical method to obtain cell samples of thyroid nodules through a fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) guided by ultrasound. In our study we aim to compare the effectiveness of two needles of different sizes (22 and 23 G) to obtain satisfactory cellularity of studied thyroid nodule. Also, the utility of processing the cellular block to obtain sufficient sample was analyzed in cases where the cellularity was insufficient in the smears.

Keywords : Fine-needle; aspiration biopsy; thyroid nodule study.
