Abstract

ARELLANO AGUILAR, Gregorio et al. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and myasthenia gravis: An extraordinary association. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2017, vol.15, n.4, pp.296-300. ISSN 1870-7203.

Background:

Pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic condition with high morbidity and mortality in 25% of patients with interstitial lung disease, Myasthenia Gravis is an autoimmune disease with antibodies to acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease with anti-thyroid antibodies. His association is extraordinary, with only one literature report.

Clinical cases:

Female of 69 years with 11 years evolution characterized by cough, dyspnea gradually evolving, plus diplopia, and clinical data hypothyroidism; with positives Anti thyroglobulin antibody, thyroid peroxidase, anti-acetylcholine receptor antibodies and anti-nuclear antibodies.

Conclusions:

Autoimmune overlap between MG and other autoimmune disorders reflects common pathogenic mechanisms. Myasthenia gravis and autoimmune thyroid disease association is rare; the association of pulmonary fibrosis and autoimmune thyroid disease is very rare, and the association of myasthenia gravis, Hashimoto thyroiditis and pulmonary fibrosis is extraordinary.
