Abstract
GONZALEZ GUZMAN, Mario Aarón et al. Ovarian teratoma torsion as a rare cause of acute abdomen. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2018, vol.16, n.2, pp.156-159. ISSN 1870-7203.
Teratomas are germ cell tumors commonly composed of multiple cell types derived from one or more of the three embrionary layers. They are the most common germ cell ovarian tumors and also the most common ovarian neoplasm in women younger than 20 years. Complications of ovarian teratomas include torsion, rupture, infection, hemolytic anemia and malignant degeneration. We present the case of a 30-year-old woman who went to the emergency room with acute abdominal pain, she was diagnosed with a torsion of ovarian teratoma. Ovarian teratomas should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis of acute abdomen in young women. Emergency physicians should be aware of the possibility of ovarian torsion in young women with acute abdomen and should have a high rate of suspicion.
