Abstract

ORTEGA FLORES, Jesús Manuel; SAENZ NIETO, Julio Cesar; POSADA MACIAS, Fabian  and  VELARDE LOYA, Marcela. Prevalence of high-risk HPV genotypes detected by PCR in women from the state of Chihuahua. Acta méd. Grupo Ángeles [online]. 2022, vol.20, n.3, pp.227-234.  Epub Feb 06, 2023. ISSN 1870-7203.  https://doi.org/10.35366/105724.

Cervical cancer is the second cause of mortality from malignant neoplasms in women in our country.

Objectives:

To determine the prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the state of Chihuahua.

Material and methods:

Observational, transversal, and ambispective. Women in the different regions of the state of Chihuahua between 35 and 64 years of age were screened, obtaining samples for HPV management to detect HPV-16 and HPV-18 genotypes and the high-risk HPV pool.

Results:

Samples were obtained from 53 municipalities of the State of Chihuahua, adding a total of 2523 samples. A prevalence of 19.5% was found, obtaining 59 cases with HPV-16, 26 with HPV-18, and 363 with a high-risk HPV pool. A positive correlation is shown for the three variables: early sexual initiation (< 18 years), history of multiple sexual partners, and smoking with the risk of having high-risk HPV infection with a relative risk of 1.37, 1.63, and 2.15 respectively.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrated the high prevalence of high-risk HPV genotypes in the population of the state of Chihuahua.
