Introduction:

Congenital heart disease affects approximately 1% of the world’s child population. In Mexico, it is estimated that between 12,000 and 16,000 children are born with heart defects each year and represent the second cause of death in children under five years of age. Without corrective surgery, many of these patients die prematurely.

Objective:

To describe the postsurgical epidemiology of patients treated in the PICU of the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de Cd. Victoria.

Material and methods:

A retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out in which the epidemiology of patients undergoing cardiac surgery from January 1, 2012 to February 28, 2019 was analyzed.

Results:

52 patients were studied, 50% female and 50% male. According to RACHS-1, risk group 1 was 36.5% (n = 19), group 2 40.50% (n = 21), group 3 23% (n = 12) and groups 4, 5 and 6 there were no patients. The CPB Time had a median of 85 minutes (range 33-300 minutes). Aortic clamping had a median of 65 minutes (range 29 to 180 minutes). Overall mortality of 9.6% (n = 5).

Conclusion:

Our results reflect the current worldwide trend of minimizing mechanical ventilation, aortic clamping, and CPB times, and thereby reducing mortality.
