Abstract

BLANCAS-CALVA, Epifanio; BLANCAS-HERNANDEZ, Jean Cristian; CASTRO-TORREBLANCA, Marisol  and  VILLASENOR-GOMEZ, José Fernando. The Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) in the Sierra Madre del Sur, Guerrero, México. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.87-90. ISSN 1870-7459.

We recorded the Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) in some localities of the Sierra Madre del Sur. The species is listed in the bird's check-list of the state of Guerrero, but no specimens from these populations existed on scientific collections, and there were no records of the species in eastern Guerrero. We recorded adult and juvenile individuals, and a nest, suggesting that they constitute native breeding populations. Based on the geographic location of the sites where the records were obtained, we infer that the species is distributed in an altitudinal range between 680 and 1900 m, between the Pacific Coastal Plain and the Sierra Madre del Sur. This area with tropical semi-deciduous forest and montane cloud forest constitutes a corridor having appropriate conditions for the presence of the species.

Keywords : new records; native breeding populations; distribution.
