Abstract

MENDOZA, Luis F.; CORTES, Eduardo; SIERRA, Carely  and  CARMONA, Roberto. Sightings of flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) at Marismas Nacionales Biosphere Reserve, Nayarit. Huitzil [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.84-86. ISSN 1870-7459.

We present the first records of flamingos for the Nayarit coast, Mexico. We did the sightings in Chumbeño Lagoon, at Marismas Nacionales Biosphere Reserve. On February 26th and 27th, 2013 we observed two individuals (one male and one female) of the Caribbean subspecies (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber) and one of the European subspecies (P. r. roseus). Probably the birds escaped from captivity given the proximity of the lagoon with tourist sites that use these birds as ornamental species. Possibly this small group has established in the area.

Keywords : new record; birds; dispersion.
