Abstract

MENDOZA, Luis F.; CARMONA, Roberto; ARCE, Nallely  and  MIRAMONTES, Emmanuel. Presence of Swainson Hawk's wintering groups in Nayarit, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.120-124. ISSN 1870-7459.

We report the presence of wintering groups of Swainson's hawks (Buteo swainsoni) in an agricultural region in Santiago Ixcuintla, Nayarit. Our observations were made during three no-breeding seasons (2011-12, 2013-14, and 2014-15). The abundance of groups varied among years, ranging from 45 individuals in 2012 to 364 in 2013. We carried out all the observations in agricultural fields being tilled, when birds used them for feeding and perching. This concentration of large groups of Swainson's hawks is probably due to the quantity and availability of food at that time in the tilled fields. In no other time of the non-reproductive season such concentrations have been reported in the region.
