Abstract

DESUCRE-MEDRANO, Atahualpa Eduardo; GOMEZ DEL ANGEL, Salvador  and  MONTES DOMINGUEZ, Héctor Marcos. Notes on nesting of the Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps) in a tropical dry forest south of the State of México. Huitzil [online]. 2016, vol.17, n.1, pp.125-129. ISSN 1870-7459.

We give the first report of the reproduction of the Violet-crowned Hummingbird (Amazilia violiceps) south of the State of México. We found a nest with two hummingbird chicks 4 m above the ground in a sicua tree (Heliocarpus terebinthinaceus). The nest was built with white fibers of the fruit of the pochote tree (Ceiba aesculifolia). Amazilia violiceps probably synchronizes nesting with the blooming of the cazahuate tree (Ipomoea arborescens) in this region of the country. This note increases the poorly known information about the reproduction of A. violiceps in the south of the State of México.

Keywords : breeding; nest description; chicks; bloom.
