Abstract

MARTINEZ-GUERRERO, José Hugo; PEREDA-SOLIS, Martín Emilio; VARGAS, Jonathan  and  SALAZAR-BORUNDA, Manuel Armando. First reproductive record of the Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) in Durango, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2023, vol.24, n.2, e656.  Epub Mar 05, 2024. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2023.24.2.683.

The known breeding areas of the Snowy Plover (Charadrius nivosus) in Mexico occur in coastal areas and in some wetlands in the center of the country. On 7 May 2022, we observed for the first time, nine Snowy Plovers, with reproductive plumage, in the Laguna de Santiaguillo wetland, Durango. On subsequent visits during the month of May and up to 18 June 2022, we registered a total of 45 plovers, including the presence of up to 21 chicks. This represents the first report of reproductive activity of the Snowy Plover in northern Mexico, in a wetland in the state of Durango. Reproduction of the Snowy Plover in this RAMSAR site expands the biological and avifaunistic importance of the area, and also provides the opportunity to increase its protection and implement management and research actions for conservation.
