Abstract

GONZALEZ DE REQUENA FARRE, Juan Antonio. El quiasmo y el dilema: Las encrucijadas de la secularización en Tocqueville. En-clav. pen [online]. 2013, vol.7, n.13, pp.103-123. ISSN 2594-1100.

"Secularization" has become a key signifier of our modern times, though its ambivalence: sometimes the concept preserves a theological-political continuum and displays a linear narration of the modern democratic revolution; other times, it refers to a displacement of everything sacred out of public sphere. Tocqueville didn't explicitly develop a theory of secularization, but he analyzed subtly the complex religious ways of experience in a democratic society and their relation to social habits and political institutions. In this article we explore how, beyond the political-theological link and lock, Tocqueville discloses some kind of Providence in our modern democratic revolution: an inevitable condition of uncertainty which urges us to decide.

Keywords : secularization; religion; politics; democratic revolution; uncertainty.
