Abstract

Information Technologies (IT) play a key role within organizations. Because of this fact, governments of developing countries decided to encourage the adoption and diffusion of these technologies among enterprises, in order to increase productivity of enterprises, to intensify the use of IT, and to reduce the technological gap between developed and developing countries. In this sense, this paper reports the results of a research conducted in Large Enterprises in Iztapalapa (LEI), Mexico City, related to the association between internal and external forces that have influenced organizations in making decisions about adoption of IT. As well as, the association with institutional factors and the adoption and diffusion of IT. Based on New Institutionalism and through two mechanisms of influence and regulation, the institutional influences involved in the adoption of IT in LEI were determined. In addition, the document analyzes the impact on governmental programmes associated with the adoption and diffusion of IT has had on such enterprises, and shows the strategies associated with the mechanisms of institutional isomorphism related to the adoption of IT. LEIs have adopted new IT because of internal reasons and few of them have taken advantage of governmental programmes associated with the enhancement of adoption and use of these technologies.
