One of the major shortcomings in terms of urban services for Informal Settlements (IS) in the metropolitan area of Puebla is the lack of sanitation. It often takes several years to obtain this service, sometimes more than 20, as in our case study located in San Juan Tulcingo, Puebla; situation that only adds to the precariousness of this settlement. The present paper shows part of the progress of our research focused on the improvement of urban IS. In it, we raise the possibility of implementing alternative technologies for wastewater treatment, on the basis of a participative management process between government, NGOs and the community.
