Abstract

To assess changes in cell morphology as sign of activation, peripheral blood monocytes from four adult cattle were obtained and cultured in vitro in the presence or not of Lactobacillus casei. At 48 and 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria, cells were stained and then, under the optical microscope, the circumference of the plasma membrane (CPM) and the maximum length of the cytoplasm (MLC) was determined. Data obtained (± SEM) of the CPM and MLC (n=20/bovine) for control cells (T) and treated with L. casei (LC), were for CPM: 41.54 (± 2.08) μm for T and 61.53 (± 2.30) μm for LC at 48 hours (P <0.05) and 35.80 (± 1.49) μm for T and 68.90 (± 8.8) μm for LC at 72 hours (P <0.05). The average values of MLC obtained were 13.08 (± 1.05) μm for T and 19.34 (± 0.86) μm for LC at 48 hours (P <0.05) and 11.46 (± 0.67) μm for T and 21.55 (± 3.3) μm for LC at 72 hours (P <0.05). The results obtained suggest that L. casei activated K. monocytes to be transformed into macrophages, which are key cells in the immune response.
