One of the main consequences of family dysfunction is codependency. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between family dysfunction and the development of codependent relationships among Mexican adolescents. Three scales were applied -The Scale Patterns of Family Structure Interaction, Argentinian Scale Codependency and Codependency Instrument- to 304 Mexican students, between the ages of 14 and 18. Results show that disunity was the most relevant characteristic in family dysfunction; while in codependency, the most relevant components were emotional confusion and rescuer tendencies. Disunity, fighting and triangulation were significant predictors of codependency by focusing on the other. Disunity, confusing hierarchies, and avoidance of conflict were significant predictors of codependency by self-denial. It was concluded that there is a strong relationship between family dysfunction and codependent behavior in adolescents.
