Abstract

PULIDO-RULL, Marco Antonio; ESCOTO-DE LA ROSA, Ruby  and  GUTIERREZ-VALDOVINOS, Dulce María. Validity and reliability of the problematic Internet use questionnarie (PIUQ). J. behav. health soc. ISSUES [online]. 2011, vol.3, n.1, pp.25-34. ISSN 2007-0780.  https://doi.org/10.5460/jbhsi.v3.1.27681.

The purpose of the present study was to assess the empirical validity, factor structure and internal consistency of the PIUQ. A random sample of 697 Mexican college students answered the questionnaire; the students also answered the Beck depression scale and a social ability scale. The factor analysis showed that the items grouped in a way that has been previously reported in similar scales developed in the US. Internal consistency determined by Cronbach's alpha at .942. Results also showed a direct correlation between the PIUQ and Beck's depression scale. Results also showed an inverse correlation between the PIUQ and social ability and between age and the PIUQ. These correlations have been previously reported in numerous studies, they suggest that the PIUQ may possess empirical validity.

Keywords : Problematic Internet use; validity and reliability; college students; PIUQ.
