Abstract

Mexico is considered as the center of origin of the Phaseolus genus, while the west of Mexico is recognized as an important area of diversity. For five of the cultivated species (P. vulgaris, P. acutifolius, P. coccineus subsp. Coccineus, P. polyanthus and P. lunatus), several aspects of basic climatic needs are still unknown, preventing to define areas of higher productivity and sustainability, as well as their adaptability to climate change. The aim of this paper was to determine the cardinal temperatures and the current and, future recommendations areas for Azufrado Tapatío, Bayo Grande y Mulato varieties. In a controlled environment, daytime temperatures were changed from 7 to 40 °C and, nighttime temperatures from 3 to 32 °C with a photoperiod of 12 h. For the phenological data were recorded: sowing date, emergence date, flowering-beginning date and, maturity date. Using regression models, cardinal temperatures and thermal requirement were determined. In order to determine the current recommendation areas and under climate change scenarios for the studied genotypes, the method of spatial analysis with the IDRISI Andes geographic information system was used, feeding the processes with the environmental information system (EIS) and, the climate change information system (SICC) of the INIFAP for Jalisco, the latter based on an ensemble of general circulation models considering the A2 emissions scenario. It was possible to establish the areas that currently have optimal agro-climatic conditions for cultivation as well as the areas that will have optimum conditions in 2021-2030 and, 2041-2050 decades. The three varieties studied show different resilience for the current climate scenario and, climate change scenarios. These adaptation options were expressed in terms of recommendation areas at municipality-level.
