Abstract

RUIZ MENDOZA, Alma Delia; JIMENEZ SANCHEZ, Leobardo; FIGUEROA RODRIGUEZ, Oscar L.  and  MORALES GUERRA, Mariano. Adoption of milpa interspersed system in fruit trees by five Mixe municipalities of the state of Oaxaca. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2012, vol.3, n.8, pp.1605-1621. ISSN 2007-0934.

The objective of this research was to identify and analyze the degree of understanding, implementation, results, effects and limitations of technology implementation of milpa interspersed in fruit trees (MIFT or MIAF for its acronym in Spanish), by farmers of five Mixe municipalities' participants in the project during the process 1999-2009. The research was through a stratified sample survey, for the application of questionnaires to a sample of 52 farmers. After the field phase, the documentary phase integrated literature review, capture and analysis of information. The results indicate that the farmers decided to innovate in components such as pruning, grafting, contour line drawing, and planting of milpa in the MIAF system and not stubble burning. And the rejection or adjustment of certain components of MIAF system was for sociocultural and economic structure of the farmers. This adoption and adaptation or rejection of the components of the MIAF system, determined an increase of maize yields and income for the Mixe farm families, besides the development ofthe farmers capacities, showing that these results do not determine that the design of this innovation in completely by farmers. During this process, the farmer has gradually passed by the decision process for adopting the MIAF system, knowing, persuading, deciding and finally confirming, in the final stage, where the farmer decides to innovate and/or reject, based on experience with the MIAF system, in a first approach
