Abstract

The influence of Asian countries in the feeding habits of consumers of rice in Mexico is causing that currently there is a demand for conventional white rice, within which, are the aromatics. Currently 100% of aromatic rice consumed in the country is imported mainly from the United States, and its market value is two to three times higher to the Morelos rice which offers the quality to exploit this niche market. In 1992 the Rice Program from the Experimental Field of Zacatepec, Morelos from INIFAP, start developing varieties of aromatic grain "Morelos quality" in order to improve the income of rice producers and manufacturers of this entity. In this way, was obtained the variety Morelos A-08, which is recommended for its establishment in direct seeding, this will allow a saving of 20-30% in crop production costs compared with the transplant system. Because the plant is s hort, reduces lodging and facilitates mechanized harvest; in addition, the aroma that grain releases is an added value that has an advantage in given niche markets that are currently being used by rice import. This material has an average yield of 8.5 t ha-1, is moderately resistant to the disease caused by the fungus Magnaporthe grisea; erect growth, height of 110 cm, resistant to lodging; yield in the industry is 60% whole polished grain, preserves rice quality Morelos, grain shape is elongated with less than 20% white center and when cooked releases a pleasant aroma that makes it more palatable to consumers.
