Abstract

FUENTES CASTILLO, María Janet; JIMENEZ VELAZQUEZ, Mercedes Aurelia; GARCIA CUE, José Luís  and  CAAMAL CAUICH, Ignacio. Sustainability assessment of bark paper system. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.1, pp.125-138. ISSN 2007-0934.

The research aims to analyze the handmade production of bark paper to identify its sustainability status, determining the current status of their raw materials and their economic importance. The place that keeps its production is Otomi village of San Pablito, Pahuatlán, Puebla: it comes from the bark of jonote tree (Ficus pentiolaris) main raw material for production. The increase in its demand causes the depletion of forest resources and pollution of San Marcos River. A survey was applied to 76 artisan families and the framework for the evaluation of natural resources management systems incorporating sustainability indicators (Masera et al., 2000), 12 indicators of environmental, economic and social dimensions were analyzed. Results show that the current system is less sustainable in relation to the past, due to the scarcity of raw materials in the community, use of chemicals that pollute water resources and poor organization of artisans.

Keywords : environmental dimension; MESMIS; Otomi people; sustainable development.
