Abstract

ARRONA-RIVERA, Alicia E.; SANCHEZ-GODOY, Félix  and  GARCIA-ESPINOSA, Gary. Mycobacteriosis in captured migratory teals in lagoons of Central Mexican Plateau. Rev. mex. de cienc. pecuarias [online]. 2013, vol.4, n.3, pp.399-404. ISSN 2448-6698.

During post mortem inspection of migratory aquatic birds hunted during 2008-2009 winter hunting season in lagoons of central Mexican Plateau, firm nodules of yellow caseous content in the liver of one Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors) and one Cinnamon Teal (Anas cyanoptera) were detected. Exudate surrounded by inflammatory cells and fibrous connective tissue was observed at histopathology using eosin and hematoxylin stain. Ziehl-Neelsen staining showed the presence of straight and curved bacilli. This study shows the presence of mycobacteriosis in wild migratory teals in Mexico and highlights the need to monitor the diseases present in wild birds and its possible impact in public health.

Keywords : Mycobacteriosis; Migratory teal; Ziehl-Neelsen; Lagoon; Plateau.
