Abstract

VILLAGOMEZ LOZA, Mario Alberto  and  BELLO GONZALEZ, Miguel Ángel. Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco: a new record for the state of Guanajuato. Rev. mex. de cienc. forestales [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.30, pp.66-73. ISSN 2007-1132.

Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var glauca) is abundant in western United States of America and Canada; in contrast, the natural distribution in the country is scarce and fragmented, its individuals are isolated, often mixed and dominated by other species. It covers the northern portion of the Sierra Madre Occidental in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango and Zacatecas; it is also present in the northern part of the Sierra Madre Oriental in Nuevo León, Coahuila and Tamaulipas and in small patches in the midwest and the eastern part of the Eje Neovolcánico in Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla and in southwest Oaxaca. As a result of exploration work conducted in the municipality of San José Iturbide, Guanajuato, a new location was identified in the mountains east of the state where a population of approximately 10 hectares was located which was determined with keys, descriptions and respective comparison with herbarium material; in this state in central Mexico the species thrives without associating with fir (Abies religiosa). The geographical position of the new record is located in Mesa Central between 20°56' north and 100°17' west.

Keywords : Douglas fir; endemic species; Guanajuato; new location record; special protection; Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco.
