Abstract

VILLA SANCHEZ, José Alfonso. The problem of the relationship between species and substance in Aristotle. Rev. filos.open insight [online]. 2020, vol.11, n.23, pp.57-79.  Epub Apr 21, 2023. ISSN 2395-8936.  https://doi.org/10.23924/oi.v11i23.449.

At the same time that Aristotle makes a break in philosophical terms with his master Plato, he somehow stays close to him; while he deals more or less with the same problems, for instance, that of the species or εἶδος, to which he adds the thesis that substance (οὐσία) is what ancient and contemporary people are looking for when they ask what it is to be. For this reason, he questions the terms of the relationship between the species (εἶδος), a subject that Aristotle retained from Plato, and substance (οὐσία), as a preeminent mode of being. Clarifying the nature of the species, of substance and, above all, of the new relationship—in its proximity to and break with Plato— is the objective of this study.

Keywords : essence; first philosophy; gender; the divine.
