Abstract

CORDOVA-LOPEZ, Luis Fermín  and  FONTOVA-DE LOS REYES, Martha. Analysis of storm waves in deep waters in the northwestern region of Cuba. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.2, pp.193-201. ISSN 2007-2422.

In order to design shore protection structures and to perform accurate risk studies, it is crucial to have good long term wave information to achieve appropriate designs from a functional point of view and save costs associated with defense structures and their maintenance. A statistical study, applying professor Goda's method (1988) to historical data taking the measurements from a series of buoys located in the region of the Gulf of Mexico, relating the meteorological events that have caused flooding in the northwestern coast of Cuba -mainly in Havana City- with the height of significant waves measured by these stations. As a result of this analysis, charts and graphics are presented that relate the return periods with extreme phenomena and the probability of their occurrence using international norms.

Keywords : waves; extreme waves; return period; probability; buoys.
