Abstract

CERON CHAVEZ, José Eduardo; LARA JIMENEZ, José Jorge  and  CRUZ DAMAS, José de la. The Cistern of Vicente Maria Velazquez School, Underground Space in the City of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Registration and Intervention Project. Intervención (Méx. DF) [online]. 2018, vol.9, n.18, pp.65-79. ISSN 2007-249X.  https://doi.org/10.30763/intervencion.2018.17.201.

This REPORT presents the exploration and architectural record of an underground space found within the facilities of a primary school, located in the Historical Center of the City of Mérida Yucatán, Mexico. The characteristics of this space were analyzed, finding several constructive and functional similarities with medieval Spanish-Arabic hydraulic works. The foundations were laid for the formal generation of a heritage intervention project that didactically and recreationally integrates these spaces into the current context for the revaluation of this historical heritage and its immediate surroundings.

Keywords : underground space; cistern; Spanish-Arabic architecture; Mérida; Mexico.
