Abstract

WOLFSON, Gabriel. El Ateneo de la Juventud y el suicidio: tres momentos de una convivencia oculta. Valenciana [online]. 2009, vol.2, n.4, pp.31-49. ISSN 2007-2538.  https://doi.org/10.15174/rv.v0i4.242.

This article tries to analyze the complex situation of the transition between Mexican modernism and its bohemia and the new “classically” inspired generation of the Ateneo de la Juventud. Alfonso Reyes’ book El suicida exemplifies in the first part of the article the tensions experienced because of the attractive modernist chaos and the self-imposed discipline of the Ateneo. In the second part, the literary outcast Carlos Díaz Dufoo Jr. helps us to understand another position as a result of the described dichotomies: silence and the extreme purification of a work resulting in complete isolation in midst of the literary scene in Mexico during the first decades of twentieth century.

Keywords : Ateneo de la Juventud; Alfonso Reyes; Carlos Díaz Dufoo Jr.; literary bohemia.
