The present article tries to interpret the Modernist movement in Latin- America, the poetry of Rubén Darío and other mayor writers of the period, with categories expressed by Ángel Rama in his essay La ciudad letrada. Rama does not refer frequently to this group of writers who follow an art for art’s sake esthetics that separates itself from political and social questions. Nevertheless, a re-interpretation of Rama’s thesis makes it possible to integrate their writings in the ciudad letrada of the Uruguayan critic.
