Abstract

DE VRIES, Wietse  and  NAVARRO, Yadira. Future professionals or future taxi drivers? University graduates and the labor market in Mexico. Rev. iberoam. educ. super [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.4, pp.3-27. ISSN 2007-2872.

The contribution of universities to the future of its students is a controversial topic. Official reports usually profile higher education as the driver for economic and social development, but at the same time they cast doubt upon this assertion pointing out that many graduates are unemployed or work as taxi drivers. This article presents the data analysis of an international project to follow-up on university graduates with the participation of nine Mexican universities. The data reveal that unemployment problems indeed exist, but also that the underlying reasons for these issues are complex and not always well understood by the policy makers.

Keywords : university graduates; higher education; labor market; Mexico.
