Abstract

GARCIA PEREYRA, Rutilio. Discurso y violencia: "El Látigo" del catolicismo. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2014, n.7, pp.1-22. ISSN 2007-4964.

This article aims to show the discursive violence Rafael Esquer exhibited at the newspaper column "The Whip" Silvestre Terrazas published it in his newspaper La Patria he edited from 1919 to 1925 in the city of El Paso, Texas. The column was signed with the name of Rafael Esquer Soldier of Christ and urged Catholics to defend their belief not only in ideology but defended openly advised them violently. The title Soldier of Christ, Esquer, was provocative and inviting by the type of relationship between the Catholic Church and the Mexican government, which was going through hard times which led to the exile of notable Catholic clergy and acts of repression against Catholic believers demonstrating in several states, including Jalisco and Michoacán. Calling Yourself Soldier of Christ emphasizing the Catholic belief Esquer, while, on the other hand, was meant as a message to the state to emphasize that the Catholic Church had their defense not only religious beliefs, but also had people willing to show-off as soldiers, if the circumstances required it.
