Abstract

ACEVES AVILA, Roberto. An approach to piety in Nueva Galicia through religious prints of Guadalajara, 1793-1821. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2018, n.15, pp.141-179. ISSN 2007-4964.

This paper presents an analysis and classification of religious prints published in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, from the introduction of the printing press there in 1793 to the end of the Colonial era in 1821, based on bibliographic catalogues and other published sources. This work contributes to the analysis of the religious practices of the inhabitants of the Guadalajara region during that period, by identifying patterns and regularities in local devotions. It also poses new questions as to how Catholic religiousness developed in Guadalajara. This study forms part of a wider research project on the evolution of devotions and the cults of saints in Guadalajara from the late 18th to early 19th centuries.

Keywords : Guadalajara; religious prints; colonial Mexico; Catholic religiousness; local religiousness.
