Abstract

SANCHEZ MARTINEZ, José Said. The subnational spending power in Mexico: an exploratory study. Intersticios sociales [online]. 2021, n.21, pp.321-345.  Epub Aug 30, 2021. ISSN 2007-4964.

The aim of this paper is to define and measure the subnational spending power. It shows information about spending potential and spending effective autonomy. With data for the period 2001-2017, the results show that: the spending power is different between the states; the potential autonomy grows due to public debt, and the effective autonomy reduces due to public debt payment. In a nutshell, some states have more spending power than others.

Keywords : subnational governments; spending power; potential autonomy; effective autonomy.
