Abstract

GONZALEZ LOMELI, Daniel et al. Eating Habits and Physical Exercise Before Confinement at Home by COVID-19 in Mexican University Students. Psicumex [online]. 2022, vol.12, e421.  Epub Aug 08, 2022. ISSN 2007-5936.  https://doi.org/10.36793/psicumex.v12i1.421.

The objective of this research was to identify the perception of diet and the relationship with physical care and eating habits as well as personal agency strategies for physical activity (PA) among Mexican university students during COVID-19 related stay-at-home recommendations. A comparative survey using Google forms was designed and applied to a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 553 students from two universities in northwest of Mexico between May and June of 2020. An inventory was integrated with two questionnaires: Personal Agency in physical activity with four factors: intentionality, forecast, self-reactivity, and self-reflection; and a questionnaire of Eating Habits. It was found that 58.3 % perceived their diet as poor to regular and only 3.5 % as excellent. However, 60 % of the young people reported that they consumed fruits and vegetables frequently and referred to consumption of fiber (50 %), fresh foods (48 %), and low-fat cooking (44 %). 30.1 % of youth do not practice any mode of PA and 45.8 % perform 90 to 150 minutes of PA, 30 % complete an exercise program and 74 % consider having time to perform PA. Students that reported better perception of diet also reported greater healthy food consumption; also, students who performed any type of PA likewise reported greater healthy food consumption when compared to young people who do not practice any type of PA.
