Abstract

MIGUEL VELASCO, Andrés Enrique; LOPEZ VILLANUEVA, Marcelo Andrés; MORENO AVENDANO, Julita  and  PEREZ PEREZ, Maribel. Analysis of the Impact of Small and Medium-Sized Cities on Climate Change. The Case of Oaxaca Mexico 2000-2015. Soc. ambient. [online]. 2017, n.14, pp.99-118. ISSN 2007-6576.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the influence of the development of cities in Oaxaca on the climate change they experience. It therefore examines the behavior of climate change based on the emission of CO2 from the urban development of the cities of Oaxaca (2000-2015) based on the assumption that urban growth tends to affect the level of greenhouse gases in cities, particularly CO2 emissions. It concludes that climate change is increasing at high rates, driven by emissions from housing, vehicles, and solid waste. The greater the degree of human development, the higher the levels of CO2 in these cities. This process tends to affect the territory with the largest biodiversity in Mexico, inhabited by sixteen ethnic groups, linked to the presence of practically all the ecosystems and vegetation types that characterize the planet. One finding is that the environmental sustainability of cities can reduce the impact of climate change on them.

Keywords : climate change; sustainable development; urban development; cities.
