Abstract
HERNANDEZ CHINCOYA, Francisco and MORA-BUSTOS, Armando. The Chichimeco system of adpositions. Cuad. Lingüíst. Col. Méx. [online]. 2023, vol.10, e271. Epub Mar 23, 2024. ISSN 2007-736X. https://doi.org/10.24201/clecm.v10i00.271.
This paper describes the adposition system of Chichimeco Jonaz; this language has a reduced system of adpositions. This phenomenon is common in some languages of the Otomanguean family (Ortiz et al 2018), which is associated with mixed systems composed of locative adverbs, relational nouns, positional, and locative verbs. The morpheme βa exhibits features that typify an adposition, this in terms of its arrangement as a specific grammatical form. The grammatical and semantic properties of this morpheme are described in detail; the formal features are also presented. In this study, the tonal system of the language is taken into consideration and the prosodic and morphophonological properties are pointed out according to the element that takes the βa form as host. The functional properties of this postposition are also presented, which are related to the expression of the notion of instrument, the formation of relational nouns, route changes and the quantification of events. Finally, it is proposed that this form βa, within the scope of the clause, presents features typical of applicatives, and in the scope of the noun phrase it encodes specific reference.
