Abstract

Objective:
Determine the relationship between quality of life and family support in the elderly.
Materials and methods:
It is an observational, transversal and analytical study. Which was done through a survey and direct interview. The evaluation instruments used are, socio demographic survey, WHOQOL-OLS and MOS. The universe of study was 368 senior citizens entitled to the family medicine unit 43 of the Mexican Social Security Institute of Villahermosa, Tabasco, México.
Results:
In this population we found a minimum age of 60 years and a maximum of 92 years. Regarding gender, 53.5 % were women and 46.5 % men. In a 29.6 % frequency unemployed adults. The schooling that predominated was primary with 28 %. The marital status that prevailed was married with 37.8 %. 31.3 % presented hypertension as comorbidity. 39.9% have a monthly income of three thousand to six thousand. In religion, 66.6 % Catholics. Within the family typology we find that the most frequent is the extended family in 55.7 %. Quality of life 50 % good quality of life and the other 50 % poor quality of life. Predominating the poor quality of life in women. 78.3 % of our seniors have social support.
Conclusion:
A statistically significant association was found between quality of life and social support. The greater the social support, the better quality of life.
