Abstract

SCHNUR, Caroline. Ethnography of Perceptions in An Autonomous School in The Chiapas Highlands, Mexico. Entrediversidades rev. cienc. soc. humanid. [online]. 2022, vol.9, n.1, pp.76-94.  Epub Mar 15, 2023. ISSN 2007-7610.  https://doi.org/10.31644/ed.v9.n1.2022.a03.

Autonomy is a concept that determines not only actions but also the sphere of perceptions. By studying a concrete case of an autonomous school in the Chiapas Highlands, one can demonstrate the multifaceted visions of “autonomous education” and point out the opportunities, demands, requirements and tensions that underpin this model of schooling. Step by step it is illustrated that even in autonomous education the wheel is not always reinvented, that an autonomous school is sometimes desired as an integral, almost greedy institution and, last but not least, that autonomy in the context of education is characterized by a feature that is rarely mentioned: its high degree of fragility.
