Abstract

TINTAYA C., Porfidio. Identidad aymara en San José de Kala, Bolivia. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2007, vol.2, n.3, pp.169-202. ISSN 2007-8110.

This work analyzes the Aimara identity in Bolivia as a recent creation. It presents a historic account of the ways in which the dominant groups have named the indigenous population of this country and it explores how, since the decade of the 1970s the Aimara identity has been constructed as a political identity that unifies a population that was before characterized as "Indian" or "peasant" even though, locally, there existed particular ways of self-identification. The case of San José de Kala will be used to exemplify this construction of the Aimara identity.
