In this article the history of the concept of frontier is analyzed in a research about the representation of the territory of the Spanish conquerors in Chile during the 17th century. It shows that the concept of frontier, as it was defined since the 19th century, is not a good theoretical tool for the study of previous periods of time; the author proposes as alternatives those of "between- two" and of "mobile frontier".
