Abstract

RANGEL SILVA, José Alfredo. El discurso de una frontera olvidada: El Valle del Maíz y las guerras contra los "indios bárbaros", 1735-1805. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2008, vol.2, n.4, pp.119-153. ISSN 2007-8110.

This paper analyzes the development of a regional identity discourse in the oriental part of San Luis Potosí's province at the end of the colonial period. Identity constructed by groups belonging to the upper economic and social classes, and expressed in a local apology based in a history of conquest, war of extermination, and heroic virtues of the men who had colonized this corner of the Spanish empire. in order to understand the peculiarity of this discourse it is necessary to bear in mind that the territory was, for almost two centuries, a frontier of war with chichimecan indians. The condition of frontier played an important role in the definition of the features of this discourse about identity.

Keywords : regional identity; territory; San Luis Potosí; Valle del Maíz.
