Abstract

CASTILLO GOMEZ, Amaranta Arcadia. Cosmopolitismo y modernidad: inmigrantes y "locales" en tiempos de globalización. El caso de los coreanos en la región sureste de Tamaulipas. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2009, vol.3, n.6, pp.124-144. ISSN 2007-8110.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the construction of contradictory and paradoxical representations, partly positive, partly xenophobic and slandering about foreigners in places such as Tampico's region where for geographical, historical and economic reasons a cosmopolitan culture opened for foreign things as an expression of modernity and progress supposedly predominates. These representations can be explained partly by the asymmetrical and conflicting relations - generated at local level - among foreigners (in this case represented by Koreans) and local workers as well as native settlers in general. The analysis provides the opportunity to examine the concept of cosmopolitanism in local situations, as the one described here, as well as that of modernity, understood as a representation of progress by means of industrialization in a capitalist global development context.

Keywords : coreanos en México; trabajo migrantes; discriminación social.
