Abstract

RAMIREZ KURI, Patricia. La ciudad y los nuevos procesos urbanos. Cultura representaciones soc [online]. 2009, vol.3, n.6, pp.163-187. ISSN 2007-8110.

This paper is an exploration of the importance of global processes studied in their segmented territorial dimension, affecting the form, structure, and urban functions of contemporary cities on local and regional scales. The first part contemplates those phenomena that distinguish the 'new' urban processes, and the meaning of the global city in the context of changes in relation to the state, the society, and the economy. The second part is situated in the context of Mexico City to discuss its insertion in the global dynamics through its transit from an industrial to a service city. This transformation occurred during the last decades, which mark the change from the twentieth to the twenty-first centuries. It is argued that this process has emphasized the urban segregation, which expresses itself in the constructed environment, and in unequal forms of access to public goods.

Keywords : ciudad de México; procesos urbanos; ciudades globales.
