The purpose of this article is to elucidate the meaning of the relational philosophical assumptions underlying the theory of social representations by distinguishing them from the split assumptions which have been guiding a great deal of psychological theories. The article also explores modes of intervention of the relational framework in the formulation of problems, the characterization of analytic units, the methodological strategies, as well as the nature of the definition of social representation. The issue of the role that non-epistemic values play on research and its relationship with knowledge objectiveness is also discussed. Finally, from a critical perspective, the connection between SR and reality is examined, including the arguments coming from discursive psychology.
